Say "Hi!" to Fennel! I've never seen, cooked or eaten it before. It's not common in Russia, and it's hard to find it in a store. Fennel has a definite aroma of anise (think licorice) and a corresponding sweetish taste. My mom tasted my baked fennel and she described it as a mixture of celery and zucchini!
This is how to cook it:
Wash the fennel and dry it with a towel. Cut in thin slices and put the slices into a pan and fry for a few minutes. Then add cream and sour cream and stir until evenly blended. Shift this mixture into a deep baking dish. Sprinkle shredded parmesan cheese over the top. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown and tender.
Serve immediately.
