Lomography Monday: polaroid spectra

polaroid spectra
polaroid spectra

This is our Polaroid Spectra. We found it in a thrift shop in Coeur D'Alene. The Spectra cameras were created in the early 1980s. Spectra film has a special image format: a rectangular 9.2 x 7.3cm (rather than 600 film's square format). It has 10 exposures per pack.

This is a very well made plastic camera. It is pretty big but it collapses into a smaller and flatter piece. I really like the handle on the side, which isn't common for Polaroid cameras (usually they have neck strap). The handle makes it easier to take self-portraits - it holds a camera in your hand any direction you point it. Spectra is my favorite Polaroid camera for taking self-portraits of Ben and myself together.

If you are looking for a Spectra camera I would recommend you a Polaroid Spectra System. It has a system control panel on the back and allows you to play with different shooting characteristics. Our camera is model 2 and it only allows us to make a picture darker or lighter.

I found this Polaroid Spectra commercial from the 80s on Youtube, it explains how the camera works in details:

And here are our photos taken with Spectra. All of them have some orange mask I think it's because I used an expired pack of film. Not too bad anyways, I'm pretty happy with the results.

I was JUST talking about polaroids. You're so lucky for finding a used one!! I went ahead and bought a fuji instax mini because they still make the film but I'm still pining over the classic polaroid. Awesome pictures too!

Hi! Found you over at the treasure tromp and I loved seeing an old school polaroid! That orange glow is really cool and something we totally try to achieve by using filters nowadays anyways. I'm glad I stopped by!
