The Business Of Color: Emerald

Have you ever wondered who comes up with the color trends that we see on the catwalk? Who sets the color trends? I was really excited when I noticed everyone talking about emerald as the main fashion trend for 2013... but I always ask myself "Where did it come from?". I did a little research and here's what I found:

Fashion trends are decided by committee. One of the most influential committees is a group of 10 people whose names are a secret. They meet in Europe twice a year — May and November — at the invitation of Pantone, a company based in Carlstadt, NJ, whose only business is color. Pantone has plenty of competitors in the color-forecasting field. But in its core business — color standards — the company has no rivals. There are 1,925 colors in Pantone's index of textile colors, each with a unique identifying number. The committee group meets in a room with white walls so everyone can clearly see the objects their colleagues have brought as inspiration.
So, ladies and gentlemen, Pantone has released their Color of the Year for 2013 - its emerald! Pantone describes the shade as “Lively. Radiant. Lush…. a color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony”. I'm very happy about this trend because it's one of my favorite colors! Emerald leads the pack of colors we’ll be seeing a lot of during the coming year: dusk blue, grayed jade, linen, poppy red, African Violet, tender shoots, lemon zest, and nectarine. Aren't all of these remind you on bright flowers in spring? So exciting!

I love reading Pantone color forecast and Trend Curve. Do you read that one? I also love me some 212, as we use the C colors and not the textile numbers.

This is really interesting! Had no idea that people would get together to decide on a colour trend. It's pretty neat that they get to decide it. I wish I was in a secret colour club haha :)

Thanks for doing the research for us. I always wondered where these mystery colours came from. I love that there's an actual committee just to choose the colours of the year. Amazing!

Can you imagine if that was your job!? Although it seems frivolous, I imagine there's actually a lot of pressure to pick the right one.

I would love to sit in just to listen to the conversations taking place in determining these colors. So interesting!

I had no idea! I always thought the colors were picked by high up fashion people but a specific committee? Neat.

So I guess I need to go purchase everything in emerald.
